The 2010 Global Mayors Forum Steering Committee Takes Charge of the Whole Strategic Planning for Expo 2010 Shanghai UN Millennium Development Goals Urban Construction Forum to Be Held in September

Initiated by Shanghai World Expo UN pavilion and jointly organized by Ministry of Housing and Urban - Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China (Hereinafter referred to as MOHURD) and the People’s Government of Hebei Province, the Expo 2010 Shanghai UN Millennium Development Goals Urban Construction Forum, with Steering Committee of 2010 Global Mayors Forum as its official planning organization., will be held in Beijing on September 3, 2010.

 

Being the first world exposition on the theme of city, Expo 2010 Shanghai is hailed as the “Grand International” gathering exploring the full potential of urban life in the 21st century. This year nicely coincides with the tenth Anniversary of the “UN Millennium Development Goals Declaration” in 2010. Just a decade ago, 189 heads of state and government leaders reached a historic agreement on the "Millennium Declaration" at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000.The eight Millennium Development Goals included in Declaration carried all the solemn commitment to national development and was noted as an important criterion for measuring development progress by the international society.
 
At the historical moment of 5 years before the deadline of achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, the distinguished guests gather together on the forum grounded upon the two objectives of “Ensure Environmental Sustainability” and “Develop a Global Partnership for Development Goals”, to probe into urban sustainability construction, urban ecological construction technology and other relevant issues, seeking to accelerate the process of the Millennium Development Goals.
 
During the forum, the Steering Committee of 2010 Global Mayors Forum will be specially honored to invite global mayors, Nobel Prize laureates, global urban organization leaders and global entrepreneurs, together with Chinese state leaders, city government officials, and Chinese entrepreneurs to discuss the current direction of urban development. The forum has confirmed the presence of guests, including Chinese state leaders, Minister of MOHURD, Governor of Hebei Province, Mayors of Durban, South Africa and Oldenburg, Germany etc and UN-HABITAT senior officials. List of other guests invited is also subject to the final confirmation.
