“The Sun and Stars lie high in sky,
The Earth vibrates with majestic songs.
All human sings the highest hopes,
And praise the birth of a bright New World.
The UN unite and strides ahead,
With fluttering banners of righteous,
They joined hands, linked shoulders,
And fought for the victorious, free New World…”
60 years ago, those who survived and remained standing after the two world wars, brush all debris and fog aside, walked towards each other, held hands and unite under the same flag of blue skies and olives. An American poet and a Soviet musician, one worked on the lyrics while the other composed the tune; together they created the New World’s “Ode to Joy”.
26 June 1945, representatives from 50 countries signed the “Charter of the United Nations” in San Francisco, United States of America, to come into effect on 24 October of the same year, with the official establishment of the United Nations (UN). Therefore, 24 October is the United Nations Day.
At the beginning of this millennium in 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations. The people of the world rejoice and international communities displayed their joy and congratulations in many difference ways. The major event was the General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in September. President of the PRC Hu Jintao also attended the Assembly and delivered a keynote speech.
Meanwhile, under the direct guidance from Communications Coordination Committee for the United Nations (CCC/UN), IMCC and other organization jointly organized a delegation to attend the 60th Anniversary celebrations at the UN Headquarters. The 180-member delegation includes the United Nations Association of China (UNA – China), The China Youth Concern Committee, China Kongzi Foundation, World Chinese Union, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in Hollywood, USA and Association of Former Diplomats of China (AFDC); with members of the delegation being ministers, Olympic stars, artists, elite businessmen and youth representatives.
Between 14 and 21 of September, the delegation visited the UN Headquarters and participated in all kinds of celebratory activities with friends around the world.
Under immense support from the UN and other international communities, IMCC organized a special event for the World Peace Day, and held many forums and symposia on specific features such as world peace and economic developments.
As a present to UN’s 60th anniversary and token of anticipation for peace in the world, the delegation presented UN with the commemorative Tripod of Harmony, and the huge scroll “What a Beautiful World”, jointly crafted by dozens of artists.
The encounter between IMCC Executive Director Ms Jin Lan and Vice-Chairman of CCC/UN Ms Jennifer was warm and moving. Because of her ailments, Ms Jennifer was confined to the wheelchair when she works and meets with clients. However, this does not tarnish her spirits and she was much respected by all. Ms Jin Lan was immediately befriended
to Ms Jennifer and their meeting was a great success. Ms Jennifer really admired IMCC in its organization of the World Peace & Development Forum and encouraged IMCC to contribute in honouring the spirit of UN, spreading the culture of peace, constructing cities with sustainable developments and promoting the realization of the UN millennium targets.
When Ms Jin Lan arrived at the airport, she was personally welcomed by officials of the UN. In recognition to IMCC’s support and efforts to realizing UN’s tenets and millennium goals, as well as Ms Jin Lan’s dedication to the world peace, a certificate of World Peace & Culture Envoy was presented to Ms Jin Lan by the CCC/UN.
We hereby relived the moving words, and also warnings after great tragedies. This is an oath of a mission that is, to this date, the grandest in mankind. An oath requiring an unwavering will and united determination:
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
AND FOR THESE ENDS
to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and
to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,
HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS.
