About the World

Violence against Women and Girls

Globally, 35 per cent of women have ever experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, or sexual violence by a non-partner. This figure does not include sexual harassment. Some national studies show that the number can be as high as 70 per cent of women, and that rates of depression, having an abortion, and acquiring HIV are higher in women who have experienced this type of violence compared to women who have not.

China actively safeguards women's rights and interests, is committed to eliminating all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence, and upholds women's human rights. First, the system of protecting women's rights and interests should be incorporated into laws and regulations, which has become the will of the state and internalized into norms of social behavior. In the process of promulgating laws, formulating policies, making plans and deploying work, the actual differences between the sexes and the special interests of women should be fully considered, and the promotion of gender equality and women's development should be incorporated into the general strategy of comprehensively governing the country according to law.
